Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m²).
BMI does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but a low percentage of body fat.
For most adults, an ideal BMI is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range. Keep in mind that BMI is just one of many indicators of health.
